His colleague Mikey's interest lies in Japanese girls...and only Japanese girls; his overworked student wants help....to plot the murder of his boss; and the first lesson he teaches consists of an hour of vigorous pronunciation...of his own name.

OMG! Japanese! Tokyo Comedy Store

Tom and Mary Jones just flew in from Texas to soak up the exotic culture of the Orient. Having vowed not to fall into the trap of the loud, rude American tourist, they're all smiles when they approach the Japanese concierge... but quickly fall victim to their own stereotypes when they can't understand a word of what he's saying. An Asian man couldn't possibly speak English, could he?!

Massud fund manager

"Everything in life has a flip side to it."

play video | show details

Name: Massud
Age: 28
Occupation: Fund Manager
City of residence: Tokyo
Languages spoken: English, Japanese, Persian, French
Nationality: Japan
Ethnicity: Afghan

Something you respect about Tokyo or Japan:
Nature, the four seasons, relative to most countries its relative degree of freedom, the culture

Something you dislike about Tokyo or Japan:
Everything in life has a flip side to it. I respect the culture but detest it when it shows its face in society. I dislike the lack of objectivity in society. Unlike the US, Japan is not a melting pot and the society is not free to the extent where other cultures can take root. Thus if you don't subscribe to the culture your only alternative is to leave the country, become a cynic, or become a martyr. Becoming a martyr requires a lot of perseverance, self-discipline, and guts as the transaction costs of changing society is extremely high. Ask Jesus Christ, he paid dearly with his life. Socrates was put to death for questioning people. Same goes for Murakami of the Murakami Fund. I don't believe in a society when the culture trumps individualism.

A place you recommend in Tokyo or Japan:
The country, Hakone, Nikko, Fuji, Izu

Favorite Japanese food:
Sushi, yakiniku, ippin ryori, kappou, kisetsu mono

In 5 years I will:
Be rich and married to a beautiful and intelligent woman

In 5 years Japan will:
Remain the same. This country moves at a snail's pace.

Favorite saying:
"I love mankind. It's people I can't stand"

Lu pole dance artist

"Pole dancing is emerging as an art-form largely untainted by the stereotypes present in the West."

play video | show details

Name: Lu
Occupation: Pole dance artist
City of residence: Tokyo
Languages spoken: Japanese and English
Nationality: Japanese
Ethnicity: Asian

Something you respect about Tokyo or Japan:
Great customer service, everything being so clean, and extremely interesting and rich history.

Something you dislike about Tokyo or Japan:
Unlike in the Western culture, individual success is not something that is celebrated - those who stick out are driven in. The women are really weak, although that's one of the things that I hope changes in the near future.

A place you recommend in Tokyo or Japan:
I really like the Omotesando area: a very clean town full of cute cafes and shops with well-dressed fashionable people.

Favorite Japanese food:
Udon :P

In 5 years I will:
be more gorgeous

Anything else you'd like to share:
I love pole dancing. Most people don't realize the extent of complexity and beauty of this art, but what makes it even more interesting is the timing and context here in Japan. People here have not had a lot of experience with pole dancing and it is consequently emerging as an art-form largely untainted by the stereotypes present in the West. Because of this, it socially can be seen similar to flamenco: an art of grace and inner strength that empowers women bringing out their beauty and passion.
